This documentary is about the American Church’s reaction to postmodernism and the story of two churches becoming one. Our human interest piece is the story of Vintage Faith Church and First Presbyterian Church of Santa Cruz crossing denominational, organizational, and social boundaries to merge as one church for the purpose of reaching the younger postmodern demographic in Santa Cruz County. As we tell this story we plan to use it as a catalyst to illuminate the bigger picture of postmodernism within the church. At relevant points we intend to present informed segments on modernism as a worldview, postmodernism as a worldview, and the emergent/emerging church movement.
We need to make this documentary because American Christians need to learn why their church is becoming irrelevant to an entire generation of young Americans. The shift from modernism to postmodernism is a real movement with real consequences (i.e. church attendance dropping, modernist apologetics losing their effectiveness, etc.). Yet despite the severity of these realities many pastors and church leaders remain ignorant of their postmodern origin. Through this documentary we hope to educate church leaders about the reality of postmodernism to better equip them to carry out effective, relevant ministries.
We also want to tell this story because it’s a great story! The two churches in this documentary are doing something that hasn’t really been done before: merging for benefit of the greater church of Christ against their denominational organizations. It’s the proverbial story of two different entities coming together for altruistic purposes despite their conflicting backgrounds. Can they overcome their differences for the greater good? We hope to answer this question through this documentary.
